Erik Spoelstra welcomes the attention surrounding the Miami Heat, even when it comes with questions about how his roster fits together.
Asked about outside criticism of Miami’s shooting and defense at Monday’s media day, Spoelstra dismissed the criticism while acknowledging that increased scrutiny accompanies the team he now coaches.

“This is what we all wanted,” Spoelstra said.
The Heat coach explained that the roster would attract more attention and opinions. He viewed that interest as something Miami had sought.
“We want that kind of relevance,” Spoelstra said.
Spoelstra’s response was one of several confident assessments from Miami on Monday. Giannis Antetokounmpo discussed the defensive possibilities alongside Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins said he believed the Heat could compete for a championship.

Antetokounmpo envisioned himself and Adebayo playing with Wiggins, Pelle Larsson and Davion Mitchell when discussing Miami’s defense.
“Where is the mismatch?” Antetokounmpo asked.
Antetokounmpo also indicated that the starting lineup remained unknown to him, so the group he described should be treated as a possibility. In addition, Adebayo believes that Miami could become the NBA’s best defensive team.
Those comments put a more specific basketball question behind Spoelstra’s response to criticism: How often will Miami use that combination, and what will it need offensively to keep those five players together?
The subject has already drawn outside skepticism. Heat Nation previously covered Bill Simmons’ questions about Miami’s defense and lineup fit.
The shooting question remains relevant to evaluating the proposed group. Miami would need its perimeter players to make opponents pay for sending extra help toward Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
Klay Thompson is also on the roster, giving Spoelstra an alternative when weighing which combination offers the right balance. Antetokounmpo’s comments did not address how Thompson would fit into those decisions.
Andrew Wiggins believes Miami can pursue a championship
Wiggins expressed similar confidence in the team durin Media Day. He described a different atmosphere around the Heat and said he believed the group had enough to pursue a title.

“The ultimate goal obviously is a championship,” Wiggins said.
Klay Thompson also acknowledged the preparation ahead. He expected training camp to be difficult and emphasized the need to complete the work required to prepare for the season.
For Spoelstra, that work includes determining which of the combinations discussed Monday can function together. The confidence is public; camp will give Miami a chance to begin testing it on the court.
