On Wednesday, the Miami Heat acquired a second-round draft pick for Thursday night’s NBA draft from the Atlanta Hawks.
While the team could subsequently use it as a part of a trade package, one new report indicates that it will keep the pick.

That pick from the Hawks was originally property of the Charlotte Hornets until those two teams made a deal on the night of the 2018 draft. In that deal, the Hawks sent the rights to University of Kansas guard Devonte’ Graham to the Hornets in exchange for second-round selections this year and in 2023.
Since the Heat’s first-round selection on Thursday in the 13th overall spot remains a mystery, there’s no way to determine who the team will choose when that later selection must be made.
The Heat had traded their own second-round choice to the Hornets five years ago in a deal on the night of that year’s draft. In that instance, that then-future draft choice was dealt to Charlotte, with the Hornets and Heat trading their first-round picks and the Heat ending up with University of Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier.
Napier played 51 games for the 2014-15 Heat, starting 10 of the 51 games he appeared in and averaged 5.1 points, 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game. He was traded to Orlando the following offseason, then moved on to Portland for two years. Last season, he was a member of the Brooklyn Nets.
