Mike Miller may have just been traded, but that doesn’t mean he’s done playing.
Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press reports that Miller has interest in signing with the Miami Heat.
The 35-year-old forward was traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night. It is expected that the Blazers will waive Miller in the coming days.
The 15-year NBA veteran played with Miami from 2010 until 2013 and was a key player when the team won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. In the series-clinching Game 5 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2012 NBA Finals, Miller scored 23 points and converted on seven treys.
While the University of Florida product certainly has a history with the franchise, he is coming off a disastrous 2014-15 season. He averaged just 2.1 points on 32.5 percent from the field and 32.7 from beyond the arc during the regular season. In the playoffs, his scoring average dipped to just one point per game.
Even after trading Shabazz Napier to the Orlando Magic on Sunday, the Heat essentially have 17 players vying for 15 roster spots come October. If a Miller-Heat reunion is indeed in the works, the veteran swingman just may have to wait until Miami trades a couple more players.
The Heat have to weigh whether or not their young wing players are capable of carrying the load entering the season, or if the team needs some veteran help and leadership from a player such as Miller.
