The status of Miami Heat free agent point guard Goran Dragic may not be as dire as first thought, since ESPN’s Marc Stein has tweeted that Dragic is pretty much a “lock” to return to the team for the 2015-16 season.
Stein indicates that the consensus among those in the NBA believe such a scenario will take place for a player who announced in April that he would be opting out. That’s due in part to the shaky status of Dwyane Wade.
The 29-year-old Dragic was acquired by the Heat from the Phoenix Suns on February 19 and averaged 16.6 points per game while dishing out over five assists in the 26 contests. Dragic’s career scoring average is just over 12 points per game, a figure he’s topped in each of the past four seasons.
The Heat are expected to offer Dragic a five-year, $80 million deal, as opposed to the four years that opposing teams looking to lure him away can offer. Dragic was going into the final year of a four-year $30 million deal he signed with Phoenix three years ago that paid him $7.5 million per year.
