Miami Heat guard Kendrick Nunn was second in the NCAA in scoring during the 2017-18 collegiate season, averaging 25.9 points per game for the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies.
However, after a phenomenal season in which he also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, Nunn went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft, something that came as a surprise to the 24-year-old.
“I was shocked by that,” Nunn recently admitted. “But things happened. But I put that in the past.”
Although he was part of the 2018 class, Nunn is currently considered a rookie because he didn’t appear in an NBA game last season. Nunn has been a revelation for the Heat this season, currently averaging 17.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three.
The Chicago, Ill. native currently ranks second in points and fourth in assists per game among rookies.
Just before the 2019-20 regular season started, in an exclusive interview with HeatNation.com, Nunn explained what goals and expectations he had for the upcoming season.
“For this season, I just want to contribute in any way I can, be in the rotation this upcoming year, just contribute to some wins and go on a playoff run,” said Nunn.
So far this season, he has done exactly what he said he wanted to do, leading the Heat to multiple victories and becoming a key piece in Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra’s rotation.
Should he continue to keep up this play throughout the entire season, Nunn will definitely end up becoming one of the stronger candidates for the Rookie of the Year award.
