Richardson and Stokes have a lot of history together, having played three years together at the University of Tennessee from 2011 to 2014. After those three years, Stokes decided to forgo his senior season at Tennessee and enter the 2014 NBA Draft, where he was selected 35th overall by the Utah Jazz.

During their last year together at Tennessee, Stokes and Richardson helped lead the Volunteers to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, where they would wind up losing to the University of Michigan. That season, Stokes was the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 15.1 points per game, while Richardson was the team’s third leading scorer with 10.3 points per game.

The two wound up reuniting on the Heat during the 2015-16 NBA season, which was Richardson’s first year in the league. While Richardson played in 52 games for the Heat that season, averaging 6.6 points per game, Stokes wasn’t able to make much of an impact, only appearing in five games before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans midseason.

Stokes now becomes the 18th player on the Heat’s roster, which leaves the Heat two shy of the offseason limit.
