Unfortunately, the Miami Heat will have to begin the coming season without a huge piece of their offense, according to recent reports. Heat star guard Tyler Herro is said to be undergoing surgery on his left foot, as confirmed by multiple outlets.

According to one report, Herro’s issue is “somewhat complicated,” and the hope was to avoid surgery.

Herro’s absence will be felt by the Heat in a major way, as he was the engine that made the team’s offense go last season. He ranked tops on the Heat in both points and assists per contest across a career-high 77 games played.

However, his absence could also open up opportunities for players who haven’t played majorly important offensive roles in the past to show off their skill sets. Maybe some members of Miami’s young core will make the most of Herro’s absence and the additional touches that will come with that.

Second-year big man Kel’el Ware is one player who may need to take more shots with Herro out. For several reasons, he could already be heading into a pivotal season with the Heat, one being that it’s high time he puts any concerns about his professionalism to bed.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra didn’t sugarcoat things when he said not long ago that the big man’s professionalism needs to improve. A strong start to the season for Ware with Herro out would certainly be a step in the right direction.

It should be interesting to see how the Heat fare in the win column without Herro in the lineup, but it also shouldn’t come as a shock if they get off to a rough start to the campaign in that regard.

The opening game of Miami’s new season will come against the Orlando Magic on Oct. 22, which will begin a stretch where six of the Heat’s first eight games are on the road. Many of those games will come against tough competition.
