The NBA trade deadline is just days away, and despite a clear desire to make moves, the Miami Heat have been unable to get a deal done.
In fact, according to a recent report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Heat have tried to make a move of some kind for the past seven months to no avail.

“With the trade deadline Thursday, the Heat (24-27) clearly needs to shake up a roster that continues to take one step forward and two steps back,” Jackson wrote. “But Miami has tried to make a move for seven months, without success, because other teams won’t take the Heat’s bad contracts and Miami has been unwilling to trade assets (such as Josh Richardson) merely for first-round picks.”
The report is just as frustrating as the current circumstances the Heat find themselves in. Their roster is solid, but without a true star at the center of it there is a clear, and not so impressive, ceiling to the Heat’s current success.
Earlier this season, the Heat seemed moments away from acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves, but trade talks fell apart at the final hour. While the Heat would have had to part ways with quite a bit to get the deal done, it would have been fantastic to see a true star in his prime back in South Florida.
With the deadline just a few days away, it will be something of a surprise if the Heat are able to make much waves. If they’re not, it will be up to players like Richardson, Justise Winslow, and Hassan Whiteside to take another step in their progressions and lead the Heat into the future.
